One of the main objectives of the AFS Southern California Chapter is education. The chapter works with several California schools to provide metal casting instruction, materials, and equipment. The chapter also holds an annual education night to acknowledge those students who excel in metal casting.
AFS Southern California is holding its annual education night at Cal Poly Pomona campus. The parking garage is Parking Structure 2 (off Temple Avenue and University Drive). The meeting location is Bronco Student Center, a 5 minute walk from the Parking Structure. A 1-day parking pass is required.

CASTING CONTEST AND SCHOLARSHIPS: Local high school and college students will receive awards for the annual casting contest, as well as scholarships for their efforts in metal casting. The casting contest challenges students by having them design and cast a pre-selected item (ex: bee paper weight).

Castings are judged for:
1. Gating and risering techniques, including innovative ones.
2. Ease of gate removal.
3. Cleanliness of part, absence of sand inclusions, soundness.
4. Casting yield. How much metal it takes to make the part.
5. A short essay submitted with the part explaining the design of the gating system, pattern modifications, and conclusions reached while casting the part.
